I suggest smashing and grinding them up, it will last much longer. I brew giant batches to keep in my fridge and start by adding a tablespoon or so of the powder/small chunks and three cups or so of boiling water in a thick pot that holds temperature with a lid. Every 45 min I add another few cups of boiling water and just keep letting it steep. I season mine with a dash of cinnamon and cloves.
Arrived in time and as expected.
